Software architect · Founder · Mountain guy

Ideas are easy.
I'm the guy who gets them done.

I'm Kevin Fricke, a software architect and the founder of Lone Star Media. I split my time between Pagosa Springs and Austin.

I cut complicated problems down to what matters, tell you straight what it'll take, and follow through.

Selected work

Ideas, made real.

A few projects I've designed and built. Each one started as a hard problem and ended as something simple.

A league platform for adults

A league-agnostic platform for adult recreational leagues, focused on players and captains. Players register and pay on their own. Captains run their own teams.

Admins save time, and it's easier for adults to get organized and stay active. Today that's 12k+ active players across Texas and about 6 hours saved per admin, per week. More sports are on the way.

Helping people keep their voices strong

The product behind Loud and Clear, a nonprofit offering free, at-home voice exercises for people with Parkinson's. They've been my client for nearly 10 years.

It helps people with Parkinson's keep their voices strong. And a ten-year working relationship says a lot about follow-through.

Relationships, seen differently

A spatial CRM that combines the best parts of a CRM with a map. You see your contacts and leads where they actually are.

When you can see your relationships on a map, you understand them differently than you do in a spreadsheet. Slick Cactus now has clients across the US and Canada.

A daily rhythm of prayer

A cross-platform prayer and meditation app, inspired by the ancient Christian practice of absolution. Built recently.

It turns a phone into a place to pause, pray, and begin again.

A little about me

A Texas guy who finally made it to the mountains

I lived in Austin for more than 25 years. It was good to me. But I've always been a mountain guy, and Colorado was the place I kept saying I'd end up someday.

Melanie and I started spending more time in Pagosa Springs during COVID. Then our youngest daughter made her case for going to high school here. We said yes.

Pagosa is home base these days, but my roots are in Texas. Austin is still a big part of my life and work.

When I'm not working, you'll probably find me on a snowboard, at a Pagosa High game, or at Grace Church with Melanie.

How I work

Everyone has ideas. Results are rarer.

Clear communication. Honest advice. And the follow-through to turn a good idea into something people can use.

01

Make it smaller.

The best projects start with fewer requirements, not more. I'd rather ship something simple that works than plan something huge that doesn't.

02

Tell the truth about cost.

Before we start, you'll know what it'll take and whether I think it's worth doing. Sometimes the honest answer is "don't build this yet."

03

Follow through.

If I say I'll do something, I do it. It genuinely bothers me when a project doesn't succeed. Fortunately, that rarely happens.

Building software with Lone Star Media

I founded and lead Lone Star Media. We design and build software for clients, mostly in Texas, turning complicated problems into simple, practical tools people actually use.

Ateamo

Ateamo is a league management platform built for adults, not kids. It lets players and captains handle their own business so league admins get their time back. It's running leagues across Texas today, and more sports are coming soon.

Pagosa life and community

I'm the treasurer of the Pagosa High School Booster Club. In Austin, I served on soccer boards for most of my adult life. Melanie and I are part of Grace Church and hope to go on mission trips. And in winter, we're on the mountain as much as we can be.

Field Notes

From the work. From the mountains.

Notes on building useful software, lessons from the work, and life in Pagosa. New writing is on the way.
